Charissa Rie | Tokyo, Japan
“just tell people I’m Hafu to make it easier“
Interview | Charissa Rie | Fashion Blogger
I am
I am who I am, I’ve lived where I’ve lived, I’ve been where I’ve been and no one can change it by what they think. I am multiracial, Hapa, Eurasian or whatever you would like to label me but, I am ME : a Chinese, European girl with a twist.
What is your cultural background?
It is difficult to describe my cultures based on the 4 quarters aspect because both my parents are multiracial, so maybe if I describe them first it will be a bit easier. My father is 3 quarters Chinese (for those who don’t know china has different ethnicities and it does make a big difference in culture) Han Chinese and Eyghur Chinese. Then, he is a quarter Russian that comes from the border of China and Russia, its called Eurasian Country. My mother is also Part of a Chinese Ethnicity (some people don’t like to include it but it IS) Half of Kazakhstan and Half French. So to think about what it makes me will maybe make your head hurt!
In terms of ethnicity / culture how would you describe yourself?
My story is a little bit difficult because of where I’ve lived and grew up. It was never just one place, not to mention countries. I was raised in Japan speaking Japanese as my first language and NOT Chinese, and went to America to attend School and learn English. I currently cannot speak fluent Chinese, but I do like to keep Chinese culture. Saying that it is difficult living in Japan with Japanese culture even if I’m not Japanese! I am very much close to Chinese and Japanese culture. I don’t have too much knowledge about the French and Russian, although I love the food!
What aspects of your culture are most important to you?
It is very difficult being from so many places, living in a country where the culture is pretty much different, and I wasn’t raised somewhere like America or other countries with many multiracial people. So it is very difficult in Japan. I have to just always remember who I am, where I’m from, where my family is from and not to forget it. In japan, i get questioned where I’m from or if I’m Japanese so many times I would give up and just tell people I’m Hafu to make it easier. Also the fact that I was raised in Japan helps. Just having your self confidence and not to be ashamed of who you are and where you live is most important to me no matter what people say about you.
Has your cultural background influenced your life/ and or work – hobbies? And if it did could you give some examples?
Probably yes. Having Asian parents that are BOTH Eurasian can be pretty challenging I believe, especially when both sides are different religions. Thats something I’m sure a lot of us have experience with but I wont get too into that story. Besides that growing up with Asian standards going to school in America where at first didn’t speak a word of English was the most challenging. Having jobs in America was also a big influence. People debating if they should even speak to me in English, or they just end up speaking to me in Chinese, Japanese and Spanish based just upon a stereotype was difficult. Hobbies definitely, I’ve done Karate and Tae Kwon Do for 14 years!
In what language do you dream?
I dreams all include English, Japanese and Chinese. Sometimes I wake up wondering what language the prior day was because I cant always remember.
Earliest Memory?
My earliest memories is still when I was raised in an inaka (countryside) farming village in between Osaka and Kyoto. Growing up in a very large old traditional house, playing in the farm everyday. 45 minute drive to the nearest train station. Till today it is probably still some of my best memories.
Growing up you …
Growing up I’ve experienced many things, and lived in many places experiencing from farming life to the city life. I wasn’t too good in school but I enjoyed my martial arts and friends. Growing up I’ve also accomplished many things I am proud of to this day.
What most people don’t know about you is…
What most people don’t know about me depends on my friends or people I don’t know of course. My friends pretty much know everything about me and accept me for me. Maybe one thing most people don’t know about me (because I don’t like to talk about religion that much) is I’m very strong with my beliefs and religion (Buddhism and Taoism)
Cannot live without?
I’ve been through hard times and good, so I’m a very simple girl. BUT, now maybe is a bit different. Has nothing to really do with being multiracial but now maybe I cannot live without Make up, haha.
What inspires you?
Other multiracial who are very strong and self-confident very much inspire me.
Currently working on?
Well, right now I’m in that point of my life where there are 2 paths, and taking this one path is to basically get ready for my future. Job, money, become stable and start a family some day. So I am concentrating on gaining as much knowledge as possible, and becoming more of an adult.
Best advice you’ve ever received?
Very simple advice that has always helped me when I am feeling upset, “You are who you are and no one can change it.”
What are you listening to at the moment?
I currently enjoy listening to K pop and C pop. But I am very open to music. I also like to listen to Kazakh Pop.
If you ruled the world what would you do?
If I can rule the world, I would just want everyone to be in peace and equality. I think that might be everyone’s wish also.
Message to the world
Regardless where your from, what race or ethnicity you are, color of your skin eyes or hair, you and you and we are all human. We should be all equal. Just because of body features, doesn’t make you less or more human.
Where can people find you? (Venues / Web / Social media)
I try to keep facebook to friends, but I am open to friend requests from good people! but please feel free to follow me on my other accounts as well! I currently don’t do youtube at the moment all though I used to produce multiracial story videos but I am thinking about starting up again so stay updated by following twitter for example!
