Blending Cultures in Design: The Work of Umberto Brunelleschi
The Blend Within “Art”
The Blend Within “Umberto Brunelleschi” (1879-1949) was an Italian artist and designer born in Florence, Italy. He was primarily known for his work in fashion, textile design, and interior design. Brunelleschi’s profession allowed him to travel extensively, which in turn exposed him to various cultures and artistic traditions.
Cross-cultural influences in Brunelleschi’s work include Art Deco, African art, Japanese woodblock printing and Japanese art, and the artistic traditions of Islamic countries. These influences are evident in many of his designs and works.
The “Tribal” fabric was inspired by African textiles. Created in 1926, this fabric featured bold geometric shapes and was produced by the Venini glassworks in Murano, Italy.
His “Mimosa” wallpaper design, was created in 1929. This design was inspired by Japanese art and featured delicate branches of mimosa flowers against a pale background. The wallpaper was produced by the Milanese company, Richard Ginori.
Brunelleschi’s “Mantova” carpet, created in 1930, was influenced by the Islamic tradition of carpet weaving. The design features a complex geometric pattern in shades of red and gold and was produced by the Italian textile company, Il Bagno.
In 1933, Brunelleschi created a dress for the Italian fashion house, Schuberth. The dress was called “Egypt” and was inspired by the artistic traditions of ancient Egypt. The design features a simple sheath dress silhouette with a bold graphic pattern reminiscent of hieroglyphics.
In 1936, Brunelleschi designed a series of plates for Richard Ginori featuring a design called “Leopards.” This design was inspired by the Art Deco movement and featured stylized leopards against a black and white background.
