Achmad Rasidi – Barnez

Brushstrokes of a Legacy

Achmad Rasidi – Barnez and a detail of his painting “Mysterious Gathering”.

It took us a moment to find the words.

Our dear father, mentor, and creative companion has traveled to another dimension.
Achmad Rasidi—known to many as Barnez—was more than just family. He was part of our collective heart, a spirit whose creativity, humor, and vision helped shape The Blend Within from the very beginning.

The Blend Within “Achmad Rasidi – Barnez” (1950-2025)

Born in Bandung in 1950, Barnez was a self-taught painter and musician whose life was guided by rhythm, color, and connection. From an early age, he was drawn to the magic of expression—singing for hours, imitating the greats, and crafting performances that carried the fire of storytelling. He was once a Dalang, a Wayang puppet master, whose early passion for narrative stayed with him his entire life.

His musical journey began in the 1970s with the band The Monster, playing shows and developing a voice unlike any other—powerful, high-pitched, and emotionally unforgettable. Influenced by Tom Jones, Deep Purple, and the Scorpions, he gave every song a twist that was unmistakably his own. In 1978, his band The Amubas recorded the now-classic track “Sedih”, which found its way into homes and hearts across Indonesia.

Married to singer Hetty Kelana, whose father co-founded the influential Asmara Records (discovering artists like Darso and Deti Kurnia), their household was filled with melody and momentum.

In the 1980s, Barnez shifted his focus more deeply into painting, developing a signature style rooted in expressive realism—often reflecting his deep Sundanese heritage, interwoven with Dutch and American artistic influences. His paintings told stories, much like his music, inviting viewers into layered emotional landscapes.

He was inspired by mysticism, family, and everyday people.

In 2016, he participated in The Blend Within’s Connected by Similarities exhibition at the Dutch Embassy’s Erasmus Huis in Jakarta, reimagining Johannes Vermeer’s Milkmaid with a unique cultural lens.

Even in his later years, Barnez was never done evolving. In 2024, he returned to music one final time, lending his powerful vocals and soulful energy to Djaga’s upcoming album Ceremonial Cycles—a deeply meaningful collaboration for all involved.

Around the same time, he joined us in shaping FUSE, our newest project exploring hybrid identities—a future-fresh weaving of past, present, and what’s to come. Barnez brought his lived experience and visual intuition into this evolving narrative.

Barnez wasn’t just an artist. He was a connector.
He taught us to notice the details—in art, in sound, and in how we treat each other. He was nostalgic about family, stubborn about his recipes, endlessly curious about the stars, and forever exploring new creative dimensions.
